Teaching your child to read Qur'an

If you teach him yourself

The book is easy. The habit is not.

One page tonight looks small. It is small. But 365 small nights become a child who can read. Skip them, and next year he is standing where he is now.

ObviousNot “we'll read later”. One page, one evening. When it's done, write the date at the back of the book. If nobody writes it down, in two weeks you won't remember how far he got.

AttractivePut the page next to something he already likes. When it's done, he picks the bedtime story. That isn't a bribe. It's two good things arriving together every night.

EasyFind your own house's obstacle. Book always missing? Leave it open on the dining table. Sleepy by eight? Move it to the afternoon. Remove the obstacle, don't add willpower.

SatisfyingWhen the page is done, show him how many are already marked. A child repeats what made him feel good that night. Not what was promised at the end of the month.

Never miss two nightsEveryone misses one. The dangerous one is the second. Miss one, carry on tomorrow. Don't start counting from zero.

Worries that pile up are not a book problem. They are a time problem, and no book can give you time. Send him to class, one class one student, with the teacher's full attention.
